Future Faculty Workshop: Strategies for Securing your First Teaching Position

Part I: Showcasing your Qualifications for a Competitive Edge
Time: 11:30 AM - 12:30 PM
In this session, we will focus on strategies and methods to effectively market and showcase your qualifications, skills, and experiences during the faculty job search process. Topics will include CVs, cover letters, teaching philosophies, research statements, and how to leverage social media to enhance your professional profile.

Part II: Interviewing and Negotiating
Time: 12:45 PM - 1:45 PM
Following up on Part I, this session will help you prepare for interviews and negotiate job offers. We will explore strategies to effectively tell your story to potential employers, virtual interview tips, and how to research and prepare for successful negotiations.

Finding Your Path: The Many Careers in the Life Sciences/Biotechnology Industry

There are hundreds of careers in the life sciences--how do you determine which career is the best match for your personality, interests and goals? Join us to hear Toby Freedman provide a high-level overview of the over 100 different careers in the life sciences, ranging from careers in management consulting, venture capital to discovery research. Toby has been a graduate student, postdoctoral fellow, biotech entrepreneur and wrote a comprehensive book about careers in the life sciences industry. She has been a biotech recruiter in the San Francisco area for over 18 years. Free coffee and cookies for all participants.

24th Annual Saward-Berg Lecture 

��️ Thursday, March 27 | ⏱️ 12-1pm | �� Adolph (Lower) Auditorium (1-7619) 

Dr. James R. Cerhan is the Saward-Berg speaker this year. He is a Professor of Epidemiology and the Ralph S. and Beverly Caulkins Professor of Cancer Research in the Department of Quantitative Sciences at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota.  He serves as the Enterprise Deputy Director, Population Science and Cancer Control in the Mayo Clinic Comprehensive Cancer Center and as a Co-Director of the Mayo Clinic Biorepositories Program.  Dr. Cerhan’s research uses epidemiologic approaches to study the causes and outcomes of cancer in human populations. The title of the talk is "Insights and Challenges of Using Real-World Data to Study Lymphoma Outcomes".

The keynote speaker will be Marisa Bartolomei, Ph.D., Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. In addition to the keynote lecture, this event will include talks by faculty and trainees as well as a poster session. Applications to present trainee talks or posters will open March 2025, so please keep your eyes out for future announcements. There will be cash prizes for trainee talks and poster awards. 

2025 Cancer Metabolism Showcase & Workshops 

��️ May 5 & 6 | ⏱️ 9:30am-3pm | �� Virtual

A virtual conference, the Showcase is unique. While the intended audience is everyone (including faculty scientists), it will feature oral and poster presentations by non-faculty scientist ONLY. This format provides the maximal opportunity for students, postdocs, and faulty to interact and network. Further, workshops will feature training (e.g., how to best communicate your science) and panel discussions (e.g., how to prepare for an academic job search). Registration is free.

Healing from Within: A Mind-Body Approach for Chronic Pain in College Students

If you’re a U of R student living with chronic pain and seeking tools to feel better, this inaugural Mindful University Project 4-week Spring 2025 course is for you! Designed for undergraduate and graduate students, the program explores evidence-based mind-body approaches, including Pain Reprocessing Therapy, Emotional Awareness & Expression Therapy, and mindfulness techniques. Chronic pain affects academic performance and well-being, with over 66% of U of R undergraduates and 70.8% of graduate students seeking care in 2023. Participants will gain practical tools to reduce pain, receive a free Pain Reprocessing Therapy Workbook, and access exclusive coaching. The course is open to students who have experienced chronic pain for over three months, have been evaluated by a doctor, or have conditions

Body Acceptance Program

Join us for The Body Project, a 4-week evidence-based body acceptance program designed to help women challenge unrealistic appearance ideals. Through group discussions and interactive activities, participants will gain valuable insights into developing a healthier body image and self-esteem. This program has been shown to reduce body dissatisfaction and promote body positivity. The sessions dates are April 7th, 14th, 21st and 28th at 5:00-6:00 pm in the UHS 2nd Floor Reifler Room. Participants are encouraged to attend all 4 sessions if possible. The Body Project is open to all undergraduate and graduate students. Program is free of charge & all students who attend will get a free journal and pen.

NSF I-Corps Regional Courses are for university-based STEM researchers and early-stage startup founders who are interested in exploring the market potential of their work and learning entrepreneurial skills. Participants learn to apply “customer discovery” methodology to evaluate the potential for translating their technology innovation from the lab into a successful product and/or service.
