Student Mindfulness Facilitator Training

Passionate about Mindfulness and would like to make a difference? This workshop will cover the history and science of mindfulness, how to lead trauma-informed practices, and provide troubleshooting tips to help you confidently guide others on their mindfulness journey. This opportunity will be helpful for students who aspire to work in the healthcare field, and of course, it will be a good skill to add to your resume! Open to all undergraduate and graduate students, but registration is required. Attendees will also be invited to apply for the Mindful U Executive Committee to take on a leadership role in promoting mindfulness on campus. Plus, participants can earn Level 1 Medallion Credit for attending and Level 2 Credit when leading mindfulness sessions. Space is limited for this training – sign up today to save your spot!
Financing Your Research: It’s Money That Matters

At this seminar, you will learn about basic budgeting concepts in academic research, including effort, indirect costs, salary caps, capital expenses and more. Learn to put together a three-to-five-year budget for running a basic or clinical research program and understand how funding is administered in an academic setting, including the roles of the Office of Research and Project Administration and the Office of Research Accounting and Costing Standards. These topics will be presented by Stefanie Fingler, MBA, director of Research Operations, Department of Medicine. This event is sponsored by the Junior Faculty Biomedical Research Association and the Rochester Early-Stage Investigator Network Program.

Dr. James R. Cerhan is the Saward-Berg speaker this year. He is a Professor of Epidemiology and the Ralph S. and Beverly Caulkins Professor of Cancer Research in the Department of Quantitative Sciences at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. He serves as the Enterprise Deputy Director, Population Science and Cancer Control in the Mayo Clinic Comprehensive Cancer Center and as a Co-Director of the Mayo Clinic Biorepositories Program. Dr. Cerhan’s research uses epidemiologic approaches to study the causes and outcomes of cancer in human populations. The title of the talk is "Insights and Challenges of Using Real-World Data to Study Lymphoma Outcomes".

The keynote speaker will be Marisa Bartolomei, Ph.D., Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. In addition to the keynote lecture, this event will include talks by faculty and trainees as well as a poster session. Applications to present trainee talks or posters will open March 2025, so please keep your eyes out for future announcements. There will be cash prizes for trainee talks and poster awards.
2025 Cancer Metabolism Showcase & Workshops
️ May 5 & 6 | ⏱️ 9:30am-3pm | Virtual
A virtual conference, the Showcase is unique. While the intended audience is everyone (including faculty scientists), it will feature oral and poster presentations by non-faculty scientist ONLY. This format provides the maximal opportunity for students, postdocs, and faulty to interact and network. Further, workshops will feature training (e.g., how to best communicate your science) and panel discussions (e.g., how to prepare for an academic job search). Registration is free. Abstracts are due March 21st.
Graduate Assistantship - Office of Residential Life and Housing Services
Graduate Assistantships under the Office of Residential Life and Housing Services are currently open, and applications are being accepted for the 2025-2026 academic year. Priority will be given to those who apply by March 14th, 2025. All are part time, and most of them come with compensation that includes a stipend, partial meal plan, and a fully furnished apartment. The ambassador program develops relationships and fosters pride between current medical students, graduate trainees, postdoctoral trainees, and alumni through events, programs, tours, volunteering, and more. In addition to increasing student and trainee presence at alumni events, the program provides education on the variety of professional opportunities in medicine, research, academia, industry, government, and not-for-profit.

There is a Co-op opening in the Drug Product Development & Delivery team at J&J Innovative Medicine. This paid industry experience offers students the chance to work on a fast-paced, high-impact project alongside experienced scientists.
Who should apply?
MS or PhD students in Chemical, Biological, or Biomolecular Engineering (other relevant backgrounds considered). Some wet lab experience and familiarity with GxP working environments is preferred. Open to students with strong analytical aptitude who want to gain hands-on industry experience. Start Date is April–May 2025

Healing from Within: A Mind-Body Approach for Chronic Pain in College Students

If you’re a U of R student living with chronic pain and seeking tools to feel better, this inaugural Mindful University Project 4-week Spring 2025 course is for you! Designed for undergraduate and graduate students, the program explores evidence-based mind-body approaches, including Pain Reprocessing Therapy, Emotional Awareness & Expression Therapy, and mindfulness techniques. Chronic pain affects academic performance and well-being, with over 66% of U of R undergraduates and 70.8% of graduate students seeking care in 2023. Participants will gain practical tools to reduce pain, receive a free Pain Reprocessing Therapy Workbook, and access exclusive coaching. The course is open to students who have experienced chronic pain for over three months, have been evaluated by a doctor, or have conditions.

Seeds for Collaboration Faculty & Postdoc Mixer

The School of Medicine & Dentistry and The Ernest J. Del Monte Institute for Neuroscience is hosting a Faculty and Postdoc Mixer called the Seeds for Collaboration on Wednesday, March 19 at 4:30 pm in the LeChase Assembly Hall. The goal is to germinate and incubate discourse that will ultimately result in inter-departmental and cross-disciplinary collaboration, discoveries, publications, and grant applications. At this event, colleagues mingle for 30 mins, and then three 5-8 minute talks are presented – with a maximum of 5 slides per speaker and then discussion amongst all after the three speakers have finished. It is hoped that “Seeds” will provide basic science, translational and clinical faculty/postdocs alike an opportunity to share their research interests and directions and to attract collaborators in an informal, social environment. Information by speakers is presented as if they were trying to find a collaborator for future work.

NSF I-Corps Regional Courses are for university-based STEM researchers and early-stage startup founders who are interested in exploring the market potential of their work and learning entrepreneurial skills. Participants learn to apply “customer discovery” methodology to evaluate the potential for translating their technology innovation from the lab into a successful product and/or service.
