Steadman Family Postdoctoral Associate Prize in Interdisciplinary Research - Applications due September 1st

All postdoctoral Associates and Fellows are welcome to apply for the competition which provides a monetary award recognizing outstanding Postdoctoral Associates or Postdoctoral Fellows at the University of Rochester whose research exemplifies the importance of multiple perspectives and/or cross-disciplinary approaches toward examining high impact questions of society.

Career Story with SMD Alum - Thomas O'Connor, Ph.D. 

First year out: preparing and navigating the 12 months post-defense.

Friday, September 6th | 10:00 am-11:00 am | Natapow Conference Room (1-9545)

Tom O'Connor, Ph.D., an SMD Genetics/Pharmacology & Physiology Alum, will discuss his experience of the first 12 months following his thesis defense.

Dr. O'Connor will give an overview of his current position as a scientist at Roswell Park and will also discuss how to traverse the time between your thesis defense and the start of your first job, exploring new-to-you scientific territory, and things to do while still in graduate school to position yourself for success in the job market.

Three Minute Thesis - Registration Deadline- September 6th

The 2024 Three Minute Thesis (3MT) final competition will take place during Meliora Weekend on Friday, September 27. An awards reception and University alumni mixer will immediately follow the event. 3MT is an opportunity for Rochester doctoral students to present their dissertation research findings to a general audience in three minutes with only one PowerPoint slide. The goal is for students to communicate their research to a non-specialist audience vividly and engagingly while emphasizing its key point.

Science Symposium with Special Guest Speaker Lawrence A. Tabak, DDS, PhD

Friday, September 13 | 10:30 am | Class of '62 Auditorium (G-9425)

Lawrence A. Tabak, DDS, PhD, the principal deputy director of the National Institutes of Health, will spend Friday, September 13 at the University of Rochester where he will meet with Eastman Institute for Oral Health faculty and residents, and School of Medicine and Dentistry junior faculty, medical, PhD and graduate students. He will participate in a science symposium and present a lecture, both open to the University community. Right before his lecture, University President Sarah Mangelsdorf will present Tabak with the prestigious George Eastman Medal in recognition of his significant achievements and service.

UR CTSI KL2 Career Development Award

Get two years of support to become a multidisciplinary, independent clinical and translational scientist through the UR CTSI KL2 Career Development Award. The two-year KL2 program helps early career researchers develop and implement a personalized, mentored research experience that will serve as a pilot project for an individual K-award (or R-award in exceptional circumstances) application. Initial letters of intent are due on Monday, September 16. University Research Administration (URA) Internship Opportunity

This career exploration opportunity is for UR postdocs who: 1. are interested in University Research Administration (URA) as a career option or 2. are interested in learning about the grant application process in preparation for a future tenure-track position.

MISSION: This pilot internship has two main goals:

  1. To determine the potential for a career pipeline for UR postdocs in Research Administration in academic departments.
  2. To provide a learning opportunity for UR postdocs to become familiar with pre-award administration through mentorship and observation in the UR Surgery Research Office.
