Overview of GLP w/ Focus on Toxicology with special alumni guest presenter, Tyler Bell, Ph.D.

Dr. Tyler Bell, an alumnus of the UR SMD Toxicology PhD program and currently a Scientist II at Takeda, will be leading a discussion on Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) and its applications in industry. He will provide a comprehensive overview of GLP and address specific topics outlined below, while also welcoming and answering questions from participants. Full program flier with details.

Nazish Jeffery ’21M (PhD) Talks a Career in Science Policy

Nazish, a 2021 graduate of Biochemistry & Biophysics, joined The Next Step podcast to talk about her career as a Bioeconomy Policy Manager at the Federation of American Scientists. She also discusses dealing with rejection, how to improve communication skills, and how to break into the science policy space. Check it out on YouTube, Apple, and Spotify.

UR CTSI Digital Health Seedling Award Program: Request for Applications

The UR CTSI’s Digital Health Seedling Award provides up to $25,000 to support research that advances the development, approval, adoption and use of innovative digital health tools, methods and approaches. The one-year award is available to full-time faculty at the University of Rochester who are studying digital health approaches, tools and data including utilizing sensors and mobile technologies, electronic medical records, data from registries and other real world data and approaches to advance clinical research and address regulatory science needs. Big Ideas in Science and Medicine Pitch Competition

Thursday, March 28, 2024 | 4:30 pm-7:30 pm | CEL Learning Lab D (in-person only)

This event will be held from 4:30-7:30 pm in 2-7544 CEL Learning Lab D (in-person only) and requires your registration by March 25 (tinyurl.com/BigIdeasinScience24) The pitch competition will involve small groups presenting their venture ideas to a panel of judges (Dr. Anthony Franchini, Dr. Shafaqat Rahman, Dr. James Butler, and Mike Riedlinger) for the chance to win up to $1000 in cash prizes.  This is a great opportunity to get some experience pitching business ideas in a real-world setting. The One-Page PhD Public Policy Pitch Competition 

Submission Deadline is April 1st 

The One-Page PhD Public Policy Pitch Competition is designed to empower the next generation of researchers to effectively communicate the public policy implications of their research using just one page of written text.

First place winner is awarded $750, and second-place winner is awarded $500. 

Important dates: Registration is open from 2/12 through 3/15; Submissions due by 4/1; Required advocacy training session on 3/20 from 2 pm to 3 pm via Zoom.

GWIS Spring Travel Award

Application deadline is Wednesday, April 17th at noon.

You must be a graduate student in years 1 through 5 and an active participant in GWIS. Travel will be sponsored on the basis of scientific merit (thus it is key that you describe your past and ongoing research), need (explain why the requested travel is important for your scientific growth), and regular participation at GWIS meetings as evidenced from the meeting registrations and sign-in sheets. To date, 75 GWIS members have received Travel Awards.

There are two steps for completing an application:

Step 1. Submit a completed Application Form (attached document) along with a copy of your C.V. and copies of your peer-reviewed publications to stephanie_scoville@urmc.rochester.edu by noon on April 17th .
Step 2. Request that your Ph.D. mentor and one of your Ph.D. advisory committee members each forward a letter of reference to stephanie_scoville@urmc.rochester.edu by noon on April 17th.

Successful applicants for a GWIS Travel Award can also use funds to attend and participate in virtual meetings.

Samantha Vega is returning to host alongside Kyla Minx, with performances from Chintz McMahon! We are also welcoming student drag performers (see form below!). Food and refreshments are provided for attendees. Event flier with details.
 
Tickets to the show are only $10/person minimum donation to the Arnett House, a project by the Center for Youth that helps unhoused LGBTQ+ Youth. Your donation e-mail/receipt is also your ticket to the show! Just bring a picture on your phone or print out the receipt. This gets you access to the show, food, and a great time! Flourish Festival

On Friday, March 21, the Health Promotion Office is hosting its annual Flourish Festival, providing students with a variety of wellness and mindfulness activities to engage in. Drop by yoga, Qigong, guided meditations, VR mindfulness, and more. Explore events and register here.

Calming U

Unleash the potential of mindfulness, emotional intelligence, and self-compassion in this empowering 4-week course. Embrace a calmer, more focused mindset to conquer academic challenges and flourish throughout your college journey.  The course is tailored to UR students but is open to all UR community members, including faculty and staff. Bonus: By attending all four sessions, you will receive a giveaway of your choosing: The Mindful Self-Compassion Workbook, a meditation cushion, or a yoga mat.

The Body Project

4-week evidence-based  program to build a healthier body image and increase sel-festeem. Open to all women and non-binary undergraduate and graduate students. Provides a safe space for all women to confront and challenge unrealistic apperance ideals. The Body Project starts Wednesday, March 20th from 4:30 - 5:30 p.m. at the UHS Health Promotion Office. Register in CCC.

OUTbreath for LGBTQ+ Folks 

Following the practices in “A Queer Dharma: Yoga and Meditations for Liberation” by Jacoby Ballard, Kyle Trenshaw will be facilitating two queer-centered spaces of shared experience and support in which participants can develop mindfulness skills for stress-reduction and relaxation. All members of the campus community are welcome to join this practice; however, allies will be asked to “step back” to make space for queer voices during debriefs and commit to contributing to safety for everyone in attendance. Classes will be held via Zoom on Thursdays April 4, 11, 18, and 25th from 8-9:15 PM. Registration is required for access to the Zoom link.
