3rd Annual Pet and Plant Photo Contest- Graduate Student Appreciation Week 2023 Event

Submit a photo of your furry friend(s) or your houseplants in our Graduate Student Appreciation Week photography contest. Photos from grad students in all schools will be posted to Facebook where your fellow students and friends can like and comment to vote for their favorite. The top pet photo and top plant photo from each participating school (based on the sum of likes, shares, and comments) will win a prize!

The deadline to submit a photo is March 31 (https://forms.gle/Djc6auk7dH2Xu7DC7). Viewing and voting on GSS's Facebook will occur from April 3 to 6.

*In the event of a tie, a winner will be randomly selected from the top photos. Each participant is only eligible to win one prize.

NIH OSP Announces New Career Opportunity

Do you want to be part of a fast-paced environment where your work has a direct impact on the health of the Nation?  If so, a career in the NIH Office of Science Policy (OSP) might be the place for you.  OSP leads in the development of research policies and programs for some of the most pressing biomedical research issues. OSP is also the primary advisor to the NIH Director and NIH leadership on new, emerging science policy issues affecting biomedical research.  OSP is currently recruiting for a position within its Division of Biosafety, Biosecurity, and Emerging Biotechnology Policy.  This position would provide expert advice and guidance to OSP leadership on major science policy issues related to biosafety, biosecurity, and emerging biotechnologies at both the NIH and national level.

Have you ever asked, "What else can I use my degree for?"  Are you interested to learn how to use your advanced degree to become an entrepreneur?  Then come to SMD Entrepreneurs' next meeting to hear Dr. Mike Wilson, alumnus of SMD, discuss how he used his PhD to start and build his own company!  

Dr. Wilson is the founder and CEO of Viomerse.  They design and manufacture highly realistic anatomical models for surgical simulation and biomedical education. Their products are the ideal training tools for accurately simulating advanced surgical procedures in their entirety.

Join a presentation and Q&A from the Rochester Kink Society to learn the basics of BDSM and how to safely enjoy different kinks! This event will be held in person on Thursday, March 30th at 7:30pm in Morey 321, and will also be livestreamed if you’d like to attend virtually. Registration is encouraged, but not required. Open to all students. Brought to you by the Burgett Intercultural Center, UHS Health Promotion, and the University Counseling Center.​​​​​

Witness to Injustice

Friday, March 31 | 2:00pm - 5:00pm | Gamble Room (Rush Rhees)

Witness to Injustice is a program of Neighbors of the Onondaga Nation and is a unique three-hour interactive group teaching tool. It uses participatory education to foster truth, understanding, and respect between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples in the part of the world now known as the United States. It was created in collaboration with KAIROS Blanket Exercise.™ Turtle Island is a reference to what is known as North America, a continent inhabited from time immemorial by Indigenous peoples. The exercise is an interactive effort to share Indigenous history that many Americans may not have been taught in school.  

This event is for current University of Rochester students only. Free food and drinks!

The Vanderbilt University Office of Biomedical Research Education and Training (BRET)

Friday, March 31, 2023, The Vanderbilt University Office of Biomedical Research Education and Training (BRET) is hosting the 3rd annual Vanderbilt Integrated Training Alliance (VITA) virtual symposium for senior graduate students.  The VITA symposium in Biomedical Sciences is designed to introduce senior graduate students to the research and resources at Vanderbilt and to help them develop skills that will enhance their postdoctoral career. Participation in VITA will include:

  • Communication Training from the Alan Alda Center for Communicating Science. Through a layered series of applied improvisational and communication exercises, participants will explore and practice using communication strategies. Find out more here
  • An introduction to ASPIRE, the BRET office of professional development
  • Opportunity to meet with current Vanderbilt postdocs
  • Individual meetings with Vanderbilt research faculty members
  • Learning about the Vanderbilt community and research resources

Overdose Prevention Training

Three Minute Thesis (3MT)

Can you describe your thesis to a stranger in three minutes?

Perfect your pitch and can explain the value of their work to fellow researchers as well as to the public, policymakers and funding agencies during the Three Minute Thesis (3MT®). The 3MTcompetition represents an invaluable opportunity for students to sharpen their research focus, improve their presentation skills, while conveying the potential and impact of their work with a perfect pitch in just three minutes.   

Competition finalists will present on April 4, 2023, from 3:45–6 p.m.

ADSE is teaming up with  81cents & Rora to get the tools, information, and data you need to negotiate your next offer more confidently. Their mission is to help underrepresented professionals have the confidence to negotiate. 

Candidates, especially women and minority candidates, receive the short end of the stick, and their mission is to help candidates understand their market worth and negotiate every penny of it.

This workshop can serve as a benefit to all students, especially those preparing to graduate soon!

UR CTSI Digital Health Seedling Award Program: Request for Applications

The UR CTSI’s Digital Health Seedling Award provides up to $25,000 to support research that advances the development, approval, adoption and use of innovative digital health tools, methods and approaches. Relax and Renew Retreat

Join the Mindful University Project’s  upcoming Relax and Renew Retreat on Saturday, April 1st from 8:30 AM – 12:30 PM! These retreats  are half-day, silent meditation retreats for students, faculty, and staff who are interested in developing or deepening one’s meditation practice through a more immersive meditation experience. Held in the Spurrier Dance Studio, participants will experience four hours of noble silence while engaging in a variety of contemplative practices, including: Gentle yoga, self-compassion practices, breath awareness meditations, mindful eating, journaling, and a dharma talk (a lesson about the practice of mindfulness in everyday life).

Join Deontae McLachlan, an Academic Counselor for the Office of Minority Student Affairs, in his class “Mindfulness for Us” on Saturdays beginning on April 1st from 10:00 am to 11:15 am. He has been practicing meditation and mindfulness for years and is excited to offer this safe space for students of color to learn these practices. From his personal experiences growing up in Chicago, IL, he knows how difficult it can be to exist within systems that do not offer kindness, care, and compassion and he prides himself on his enduring spirit of teaching and mentorship. Mindfulness Made Simple offers the opportunity for students of color to learn the "how" of mindfulness and what it looks like for them in a shared community.

Mindful University Project Offerings for Graduate Student Appreciation Week

Wednesday, April 5 | 12:00pm - 1:00pm | May Room

The Mindful University Project is offering some classes and workshops in honor of Graduate Student Appreciation Week! Step away from your academics  to fill up your cup during Graduate Student Appreciation Week with a yoga class  and writing workshop on Wednesday April 5th. Rebecca’s All-Levels Vinyasa class will take place from 12 - 1 PM  in the May room. This all-levels yoga class will guide you through mindfulness techniques that will help you re-center and get back to your work with more energy, ease, and intention for the rest of the semester! The class is free and open to all graduate students, be sure to save your spot today! 

Kaylen’s Mindful Writing for Wellness Program will be a writing workshop centered on mindful self-care for graduate students. You’ll have the opportunity to engage in a short mindfulness practice, reflect on journal prompts around personal wellness, and to share your experiences with others. This program will take place April 5th at 8 pm via zoom. Be sure to save your spot!

The Flourish Festival

The Health Promotion Office is hosting their inaugural Flourish Festival on Friday, April 14th. This full-day event will provide students with a variety of wellness and mindfulness activities to engage in!  

Students are invited to drop by during the day to engage in programming including: yoga classes, mindfulness sessions, a mindful outdoor walk, therapy dogs, virtual reality mindfulness at the Wellness Oasis, a mindful eating pop-up, learn about many different well-being resources available at the Wellness Fair, and more! Visit the Flourish Festival website for the full schedule of events and registration for the yoga and mindful outdoor walks.

Students who check in to 4 or more events at the Festival will be entered into win one of three raffle prizes, including a Fitbit Inspire 2, face masks, essential oils, a yoga mat, journals, an Iron Flask water bottle, and more!
