GWIS 2022 Fall Seminar Series

TOPIC: “Building mentee self-efficacy: a toolbox for wellness and resilience”

This special GWIS meeting is part of a Wellness and Resilience Workshop training series funded by a supplement to the NIH NIGMS T32 in Cellular, Biochemical and Molecular Sciences. Attendees of this GWIS-geared workshop will be asked to complete a brief survey via Google form after the seminar. Refreshments will be provided.

Funding, Grant and Travel Award Opportunities

GWIS Fall Travel Award 2022
The deadline for the Travel Award application is TUESDAY, November 15th at noon. You must be a graduate student in years 1 through 5 and an active participant in GWIS. Travel will be sponsored on the basis of scientific merit (thus it is key that you describe your past and ongoing research), need (explain why the requested travel is important for your scientific growth), and regular participation at GWIS meetings as evidenced from the meeting registrations and sign-in sheets. To date, 66 GWIS members have received Travel Awards. There are two steps for completing an application:

Step 1. Submit a completed Application Form along with a copy of your C.V. and copies of your peer-reviewed publications to stephanie_scoville@urmc.rochester.edu by noon on November 15.

Step 2. Request that your Ph.D. mentor and one of your Ph.D. advisory committee members each forward a letter of reference to stephanie_scoville@urmc.rochester.edu by noon on November 15.

Rising Black Scientists Award Applications Open
Cell Signaling Technology and the Elsevier Foundation are seeking Black aspiring graduate student and postdoctoral scholar scientists or active researchers at American institutions within the United States to apply for the Rising Black Scientists Award to provide funds to support professional development. Winners will receive $10,000 award, $500 in travel funds, and complementary registration for an Elsevier conference of their choice that occurs within 2 years of the award announcement. Graduate students and postdoctoral scholars are eligible to apply. Full details here.

Koru 2.0 Hosted by the Mindful University Project
Join our supportive practice community where together, we will build skills and practices to integrate into our daily lives. In this course, you will learn some additional meditation practices, chair yoga, and experience a silent retreat for the last class to find stillness to close out our time together. Both will be taking place from 12:00-1:15 PM in Haven’s Lounge. Sign up today to save your spot! Open to all faculty, staff, and students.

Self-Defense Workshops for Graduate Student Women
Are you a graduate student woman and wants to learn self-defense? Join Rachel and Dina, two certified pink-belt Gracie Women Empowered instructors, for free self-defense seminars on November 12 and December 3 from 5:00-6:30pm. This seminar will cover the psychological and physical aspects of self-defense by teaching beginner-friendly Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu techniques in a fun and collaborative training environment. No previous martial arts experience is required. Held by the Graduate Student Wellness Committee. Open to all graduate student women. Registration is required.

Position Opening at The Center for Lifespan Psychology of The MPI for Human Development
Dr. Ulman Lindenberger is currently looking for someone who would like to start working as a principal investigator at the Center for Lifespan Psychology of the MPI for Human Development in Spring 2023. IND 439 Leadership & Management for Scientists - Spring 2023

Starts on January 12, 2023 and Ends on April 20, 2023 (Thursdays - 2:00 pm-3:40 pm). Registration Opens Monday, November 14, 2022. This spring 1 credit-hour course is directed by Eric Vaughn, myHub URBEST Career Services Director. IND439 is designed for graduate students and postdoctoral scientists who wish to enhance their leadership and management skills. More info here.

2022 PDA Career Enhancement Award

The Career Enhancement Award  (please click link for more information) has been created as part of the PDA’s mission to support the professional development of postdoctoral researchers at the University of Rochester.  All application documents must be submitted via this online form by Tuesday, November 15th to be considered for the award. The winners of the award will be announced in December.

International Students and Scholars Advisory Board (ISSAB)
The International Student and Scholar Advisory Board is looking for leaders to:
 
Provide feedback to ISO on policies and practices.

  • Facilitate communication between ISO and the University’s international community.
  • Identify issues across the University that impact the international population.
  • Develop programs that create opportunities for networking and engagement.  

Interested students should be:

  • Currently registered University of Rochester students for 2022-2023 academic year
  • Available in Rochester for in-person meetings and events as needed
  • Able to commit to 1-5 hours of involvement per month from September
