Thanks to the organizers of the 2024 GRC meeting "Light-Dependent Molecular Mechanism, Cellular Response and Organismal Behavior" for nominating me for a PhD student talk in the main program. Here's more evidence of changing post-PhD career paths, this time for graduates of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory. More recent cohorts were less likely to go into PI roles, and more likely to go into other academic roles, industry research, non-research, and even non-science roles. While in this particular example the majority of graduates stayed in academia, it's a pretty reasonable assumption that academia will be the minority outcome for EMBL graduates soon. Chiemeka Chinaka, our third grant recipient, holds a Bachelor of Biological Science from QUT (Queensland University of Technology), and a first-class Honours degree in science from University of the Sunshine Coast. Through his wealth of experience as a Neurotechnician, he secured a Rotary international scholarship in 2021 for a PhD at the UQ Queensland Brain Institute. Chiemeka's research project delves into the Health Benefits and Economic Consequences of Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) for individuals living with Parkinson's Disease. It explores the health outcomes of using DBS to manage the symptoms of PD compared to the use of PD medications only.
