Support AAPI Postdoctoral Scholars & Graduate Students: Join the efforts
Thank you so much for your interests in joining us! Since organizing events takes human time and effort, we need people to get the tasks done for our monthly events. Because the yearly plan was set with the budget request in advance, there is not much room for new ideas or changes until May. For those who are willing to support the planned events until May, I can show how to organize events and run this group for new leadership after May for the next academic year. Here are what we need people for:
  • January, Lunar new year celebration & May, AAPI heritage month celebration (two big events with IOEI): make slides to introduce cultural celebrations and edit the slides, make and print out sign in sheets and table champion sign in sheet, pick up the catering food when one restaurant does not deliver, come about 30 minutes early to prepare for the event, clean up after the event, etc.
  • February: AAPI faculty panel discussion on Zoom with either Vietnamese or Korean professors: identify those professors (need to ask Vietnamese/Korean students to find Vietnamese/Korean professors), set up a Zoom registration link for the session and another link for a mock session, attend a mock session with the panelists to shape the session (perhaps with our questions), take notes during the mock session (then I will edit) to share it with the panelists, attend the panel discussion, record the panel discussion, summarize the panel discussion (then I will edit), add a caption to the video, & upload the video and summary on the website
  • March, AAPI games over lunch event with graduate students and postdocs: make and print out sign in sheets, pick up the catering food when one restaurant does not deliver, come about 30 minutes early to prepare for the event, clean up after the event, etc.
  • April, picnic (?) or a movie (?) gathering with graduate students and postdocs: plan an event (if an AAPI movie, need to figure out which movies are okay to watch together, following regulations, and how to do so on campus, whose account to use, etc.), make and print out sign in sheets, pick up the catering food when one restaurant does not deliver, come about 30 minutes early to prepare for the event, clean up after the event, etc.
It's a nice plus if we represent more AAPI sub-cultures other than a few sub-cultures that the current committee members came from; we especially welcome people from Philippines, Vietnam, Japan, Pakistan, Cambodia, Hmong, Thailand, and all of the other AAPI sub-cultures. Please join us to continue our events (our website https://blogs.rochester.edu/support_aapi/ describes our work so far and what we envision to do).

If you are interested in joining the committee, are you willing to do the the work to support events we host, such as checking regulations on movie screening on campus, setting up Zoom links for meetings, announcing events to our listserv, emailing multiple departments to advertise the events, organizing the budget, writing summaries of our events to post on our website, and other 'admin' or 'chore-like' things to support the events. But it's for one event per month.

If you are interested in joining the committee, are you comfortable following someone else' lead? The events are set up for the year, so we will not necessarily discuss new ideas/events until planning the next year events; discussions are limited to some logistics on the planned events and certain small decisions, but not big ones or how we have been doing things. We could Zoom once or twice a month to discuss who will do what to support our events.

If you are interested in joining the committee, are you willing to learn about this committee's work slowly without needing a full introduction? Since we are all volunteers, we dedicate our limited time to work to host the events. Introduction would be a new member reading our yearly plan document, and a new member will learn about this committee by doing each task monthly. *
If you are interested in joining the committee, do you have standing meetings for lunch times on Fridays or Thursdays or travel frequently on Saturdays? Or are you able to attend one event per month in one of those days? Our monthly events have been lunch times either Fridays or Thursdays or Saturdays.  *
Would you like to involve and/or participate in these efforts and initiatives to support AAPI scholars? If so, to what capacities do you want to contribute? *

If you identify yourself as AAPI, which AAPI sub-culture? I listed 12 top AAPI groups based on Pew Research Center, but please feel free to list any other AAPI sub-cultures.
