Faculty Resources

AS&E College Course Development Grants

The University of Rochester is committed to supporting faculty in developing innovative courses. The University offers several grants to help faculty develop or significantly revise courses. These grants are available to all tenure-track and instructional faculty through a number of Arts, Sciences & Engineering (AS&E) offices and programs.

To streamline the proposal, evaluation, selection, and funding process, the University has moved to a common proposal cycle for course development grant programs in AS&E.

Faculty are strongly encouraged to reach out to the contact person listed below for advice and guidance about developing a feasible and fundable proposal.

Grants for Creating New or Revising Courses

Teaching Innovation Grant

The Teaching Center offers a Teaching Innovation Grant which provides up to $7,500 to help faculty create or revise a “high-impact” course. The majority of the students enrolled must be AS&E undergraduates. Contact Rachel Remmel at rachel.remmel@rochester.edu with questions.

Community-Engaged Learning Course Development Grant

In an effort to support and encourage community-engaged learning, the Center for Community Engagement (CCE) created the Community-Engaged Learning Course Development Grant which awards faculty up to $10,000 to help them create community-engaged learning courses. Contact Andrew Thomas at andrew.thomas@rochester.edu with questions.

Bond Family Foundation Faculty Scholar Grant

The Greene Center for Career Education and Connections offers the Bond Family Foundation Faculty Scholar Grant which provides up to $5,000 for faculty to integrate high impact, project-based learning in partnership with a Rochester-based organizational partner. Contact Dr. Lynn Donahue at lynn.donahue@rochester.edu with questions.

Applying

Faculty can apply online to the grants listed above. The online application submission form will ask you to indicate under which of the course development programs you’d like to be considered.

If you’re considering applying for multiple programs, it’s important to keep in mind that each program asks for different information about your project for your proposal. We encourage you to consult with the contact person for each program and to submit a separate proposal for each of the programs to which you apply.

If your course is not selected for this funding cycle, you are welcome to reapply. We suggest reaching out to the grant contact before resubmitting to make any necessary modifications to your proposal.

Salary Funding Support

These funding programs include programs that can support supplemental salary and salary to support course release. The programs differ, however, in the terms on which salary will be awarded and the amounts available.

Other Course Development Funding Sources

The Career Curriculum Course Development Grant supports faculty interested in embedding career-related activities into new or existing courses.

The Teaching Center offers several other funding opportunities, including a College Course Development Fellowship.

The River Campus Libraries offer an Open Educational Grant Program, which contains a course development track.

For Hajim faculty, the Wadsworth C. Sykes Faculty Engineering Award funds faculty-led projects for the development of innovative curricular courses and programs for engineering students, with particular emphasis on the first- and second-year student programs.
