After a whole lot of biking, running, and walking to benefit Wilmot last weekend (it was great to see so many of you there!), I want to highlight another way our department is making strides.
Since our Leadership Retreat in May, our divisions have been developing solutions to better meet the needs of patients throughout the region. Today, I want to spotlight Gastroenterology and Hepatology's efforts to improve access to GI care and build advanced skills in the region.
Data shows that patients are most motivated to get a colonoscopy within the first few weeks of receiving a referral. The longer they have to wait, the less likely they will get screened.
To alleviate delays at Strong and Highland, GI teams across the system are now scheduling procedures collaboratively, allowing patients to get the earliest appointment closest to home. They’ve also implemented a Fast Pass system that sends a MyChart message to patients who have distant appointments or are on the waitlist if an earlier appointment opens, helping the system fill procedure slots more efficiently.
To make this all possible, GI leaders across all our hospitals are collaboratively recruiting new physicians to fill gaps in colonoscopy and general GI care in the region. APPs and nurses who are skilled in advanced procedures are also offering training to their colleagues across the region.
These changes are already bearing fruit. Fewer cases are being transferred to Highland and Strong unnecessarily, keeping patients closer to home and decreasing wait times.
Congratulations to our GI team on helping us work toward our strategic goal to deliver world-class, equitable care across our region!
Be well,
Ruth O'Regan, MD
