| Letter from the Chair |
|
Last week, I was among the over 3,000 faculty and staff members who joined leadership’s webinar regarding recent federal policy changes and how they will impact our university and community. If you weren’t able to attend, you can watch it here.
As we face major cuts to federal health care spending, it’s clear that challenging times lie ahead. But I want to echo a few messages from our leaders.
First, as URMC CEO David Linehan, MD, stated, we are starting from a strong financial position—thanks in no small part to all of you. Our collective sacrifices will preserve our ability to deliver excellent patient care, do impactful research, and train the health care workforce of tomorrow.
Second, our “systemness,” as Linehan called it, is a large part of our strength. Because we operate as a system, all five of our rural affiliates are breaking even or have positive margins, which is rare these days. As the outlook for rural hospitals is particularly uncertain, our ability to work cohesively across UR Medicine to optimize care delivery puts us all—and particularly our rural affiliates—in a better position to weather this storm.
Third, your work has never been more important. As Linehan said, “the patients will keep coming,” and more of them will present with advanced disease due to a lack of access to primary or preventive care. We must continue to show up for those in need, especially as their needs are likely to grow.
Finally, I want to thank you all for the outstanding work you do every day and for your understanding during these difficult times.
We face these challenges together and can move forward by working as a team.
Be well,
Ruth O'Regan, MD

Bioinformatics Shared Resource
Our new Bioinformatics Shared Resource provides standardized analyses (DNA-seq, RNA-seq, scRNA-seq, ATAC-seq, ChIP-seq, and spatial transcriptomics) and advanced customized workflows (multi-genomics data integration and public dataset mining). DOM-mentored trainees and faculty without current research funding can request bioinformatics analysis at any stage of the research cycle.
Clinical Trials Framework
We've launched a comprehensive Clinical Trials Framework designed to streamline and enhance our clinical research capabilities. Learn more about the new framework, which aims to reduce administrative burden, accelerate study initiation, and provide investigators with robust support systems and data analytics to enhance trial success rates..

Pilot Award Program in Music and Research
The UR Aging Institute is partnering with the Eastman Performing Arts Medicine Center to offer pilot awards of up to $25,000 to support one-year projects focused on music and aging research. A request for applications will be issued on September 15.
ClinicalTrials.gov Requirement Change
Effective September 25, any projects submitted to NIH funding opportunities with the designation “basic experimental studies with humans” in the title must be registered, once awarded, in ClinicalTrials.gov before research subjects are enrolled. When the study is completed, results must also be reported to ClinicalTrials.gov. Email researchhelp@urmc.rochester.edu if you need assistance.
