NIH Leader Larry Tabak Visits UR for Two Exclusive Talks
 
Join the University community on Friday, September 13, as Lawrence Tabak, DDS, PhD, principal deputy director of the NIH and former senior associate dean for Research at UR, returns to campus. He will deliver two pivotal talks on the origins of mucin-glycoproteins and the challenges in biomedical research. He will also receive the prestigious George Eastman Medal. Advancing Geriatric Oncology: DOM/Wilmot Researchers Lead the Way
 
New research led by Supriya Mohile, MD, MS, Melissa Loh, MBBCh, BAO, MS, and Allison Magnuson, DO, from Hematology/Oncology, highlights the critical role of geriatric assessments in tailoring cancer care for older adults. Their work is setting new standards for personalized care and addressing critical health inequities in oncology.
 
 
 
Save the Date! Research in DEI & Health Equity Symposium
 
The DOM will host the third annual event on February 28, featuring your work! If your research is in the realm of health equity, submit your abstract by September 30. Accepted proposals will involve a 10-minute presentation followed by Q&A, with an option to present a poster. Awards will be given for best oral presentation, best poster, and best workplace community outreach and engagement project.

Grants: Elizabeth Pope-Collins, MD, from Hospital Medicine, received the HMD Faculty Development Fund Grant. Her project is a sub-study within a national, multi-institutional study: "Identification and Prevention of Inappropriate Interhospital Transfers (POINT) Study: URMC Social Determinants of Health Subgroup Analysis."

Honors: Francis Coyne, MD, from Transitional Care Medicine, was appointed co-chair of the American Society of Hematology's Sickle Cell Disease Health Professions Education Task force.

Awards: Chin-Lin Ching, MD, from Highland Hospital Palliative Care, was selected as Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine's inaugural Dr. Lata Sabnis Teacher of the Year (Extramural). The award recognizes faculty from outside that department for excellence in training residents.

Publication: Chair Ruth O’Regan, MD, is a co-author of "Breast Cancer Index in Premenopausal Women With Early-Stage Hormone Receptor–Positive Breast Cancer," published in JAMA Oncology.

Publication: Christopher Ritchlin, MD, MPH, Javier Rangel-Moreno, PhD, Francisco Tausk, MD, and Maria de la Luz Garcia-Hernandez, PhD, from Allergy, Immunology & Rheumatology, are co-authors of "Psoriatic arthritis subtypes are phenocopied in humanized mice," published in JCI Insight.

Publication: Angela Branche, MD, Ann Falsey, MD, and Edward Walsh, MD, from Infectious Diseases, are co-authors of "Residency in Long-Term Care Facilities: An Important Risk Factor for RSV Hospitalization," published in The Journal of Infectious Diseases.

In the News: Thomas Carroll, MD, PhD, co-authored the op-ed "Can AI help ease medicine’s empathy problem?," published in STAT News.

Advance Your Research with the UR CTSI KL2 Award

The KL2 Career Development Award offers two years of support to help early career researchers become independent clinical and translational scientists. Participants will receive mentorship to develop a pilot project for future K or R award applications. Initial letters of intent are due September 16. BioStats Open House and Office Hours

The DOM offers a Biostatistical Shared Resource to support mentored faculty and trainees conducting research who do not have current funding available to cover their activities. The Research Leadership Team invites you to an open house to meet the team, ask questions, and explore available resources. Anolik to Give Keynote Address on Precision Medicine

Jennifer Anolik, MD, PhD, chief of Allergy, Immunology & Rheumatology, will deliver the keynote address at the New York State Rheumatology Society 2024 Fall Meeting. Her presentation, "The Promise of Precision Medicine in Rheumatoid Arthritis," will explore how single-cell analysis of joint tissue is advancing our understanding of RA and guiding more personalized treatment approaches. The meeting is September 27 – 29.

The multi-department initiative, which includes DOM members Francis Coyne, MD, from Transitional Care Medicine, Lalita Movva, MD, Amy Blatt, MD, and Ashley Jenkins, MD, MSc, from Hospital Medicine, encourage anyone who is interested to join them in their initiative and attend the open events below:

  • Saturday, September 7: Sickle Cell Advocates of Rochester Picnic and Fundraising Walk. Genesee Valley Park, registration at 10 a.m., walk at 11 a.m., family events 1 – 5 p.m.
  • Monday, September 16: Sickle Cell Information Tables. Strong Memorial Lobby, Flaum Atrium, and Café 601 in the morning. Cookies available!
