Cutting Cancer Disparities: URMC Partners with Black Barbers for Screening Awareness
 
The DOM and Wilmot Cancer Institute have launched "BarberED, BeautiED, then Screened," a community-driven initiative to address racial disparities in colon cancer screening. The July Health Equity Update showcased the efforts of DOM members Janice Cheong, MD, from Gastroenterology & Hepatology, and Robert Fortuna, MD, MPH, from Primary Care.

Thu Le Appointed Chair of Medicine
at UC Irvine
 
Thu Le, MD, chief of Nephrology since 2018, was named chair of Medicine at University of California, Irvine. During her tenure, she led the division through exceptional growth and success. "Though this is a huge loss for our department and URMC," said Ruth O'Regan, MD, "I am delighted that she is taking the next step in her career. From the first time I met Thu, I realized it was only a matter of time before she would be snapped up as a chair elsewhere and am glad to have worked with her since I joined the University."
 
 
 
Elevating Excellence: Named Professorships for Levstik and Rosero
 
The University bestowed named professorships to DOM leaders Mark Levstik, MD, chief of Gastroenterology & Hepatology, now the Segal-Watson Professor in Medicine, and Spencer Rosero, MD, chief of Cardiology, now the Paul N. Infectious Diseases Pilot Awards – Vaccine and Treatment Evaluation Unit

The VTEU invites research faculty from across the University to submit proposals for Infectious Diseases Pilot Awards. Two awards, each up to $50,000, will support one-year projects in areas such as respiratory or enteric pathogens, COVID, sexually transmitted infections, or emerging infections, including antibiotic resistance. Initial abstracts are due Thursday, August 15 by 5 pm. Read the RFA for more information.

 

BioStats Open House and Office Hours

The DOM offers a Biostatistical Shared Resource to support mentored faculty and trainees conducting research who do not have current funding available to cover their activities. The Research Leadership Team invites you to an open house to meet the team, ask questions, and explore available resources.
