Could a Cancer Protein Be at the Heart of Cardiac Scarring and Disease?
 
Eric Small, PhD, and colleagues from the Aab Cardiovascular Research Institute, found that the tumor suppressor protein p53 might play an important role in both. Supported in part by the CTSI, the research shows that too much p53 may speed progression of a heart rhythm disease, while too little p53 could lead to scarring after cardiac injury.
 
 
 
Pancreatic Cancer Discovery Opens the Door for New Clinical Trial at Wilmot
 
Wilmot Cancer Institute will be the first institution in the US to study the safety and effectiveness of an experimental drug found by Wilmot scientists. The groundbreaking trial will be led in part by division chief Aram Hezel, MD, and Nabeel Badri, MBChB, from Hematology/Oncology.

Podcast: Vivek Kaul, MD, from Gastroenterology & Hepatology, co-founded a new podcast with the American College of Gastroenterology. Learn about its origins and listen to the first episode.

Honors: Robert Fortuna, MD, MPH, from Primary Care, was elected to the Board of Directors of the Association of Med-Peds Physicians.

Awards: The Palliative Care division, led by interim chief Erin Denney-Koelsch, MD, received Advanced Certification from the Joint Commission, and was recognized for extraordinary services by the Joint Meeting on the Quality of Care. Read more about the division's achievements.

Publication: Jennifer Anolik, MD, PhD, interim chief of Allergy, Immunology & Rheumatology, co-authored "Deconstruction of rheumatoid arthritis synovium defines inflammatory subtypes," published in Nature. Other authors/contributors include Javier Rangel-Moreno, PhD, Darren Tabechian, MD, Jennifer Barnas, MD, PhD, and Christopher Ritchlin, MD, MPH.

As Mark Taubman, MD, prepares to retire from his role as Dean of SMD, the DOM was thrilled to host a Festschrift Conference to honor his legacy as a physician, researcher, mentor, and leader. "We learned so much about Mark from his remarkable contributions in the area of vascular biology to his prowess as a leader in the medical center, about his love of music, opera, wine, the Yankees, and most importantly Lois and Jan, his wife and daughter," said Ruth O'Regan, MD, chair of Medicine. Get ready for a heartwarming new take on Match Day: King Mazumdar, MD, MBA, and Kelly Russo, MD, are now engaged! Their story began on their very first day at Albany Medical College and they've been inseparable since. Their futures now entwined, they couples-matched into the Internal Medicine residency program here at URMC. King proposed in October at beautiful Boldt Castle on Heart Island in the Thousand Islands. Together, King and Kelly love going to concerts, fishing, making homemade pasta, and most importantly, spending time with their two guinea pigs, Chester and Comet.
