Massive Cross Departmental Collaboration Delivers Unique Heart/Kidney Transplant
 
Ashley Cuylear has a new lease on life, thanks to receiving two new organs on the same day. A dual-organ transplant is a monumental undertaking, requiring the collaboration of numerous departments. Ashley's care included DOM members from Allergy, Immunology & Rheumatology, Cardiology, Infectious Diseases, and Nephrology. Transplant cardiologist Jeffrey Alexis, MD, said they "developed multiple plans to address any potential scenario and challenge." Read her story and watch a touching video of Ashley's journey.

Wally Johnson Stepping Down as Director of Primary Care
 
After nearly two decades of leadership, Wally Johnson, MD, will step down as director of Primary Care on June 30. He will continue to see patients at Eastside Internal Medicine. Johnson was a powerful force in the growth and expansion of the network, which now serves seven counties and nearly 270,000 patients. Thank you, Wally, for your many years of dedication.
 
 
 
Ed Walsh and Ann Falsey Lead the Way in RSV Vaccine Research
 
A recent study in the New England Journal of Medicine describes the efficacy of an RSV vaccine for older adults. Lead author Ed Walsh, MD, and co-author Ann Falsey, MD, longtime professors of Infectious Diseases, are thrilled that the phase 3 clinical trial data has been presented to the FDA for approval, positioning URMC as an epicenter of vaccine development.

Honors: Jing (Jason) Wu, PhD, from Nephrology, was elected as a Fellow of the American Heart Association, conferred by the Council on Hypertension.

Awards: Suma Prakash, MD, from Nephrology, earned a UR CTSI Pilot Award for her project "Understanding the kidney replacement therapy decision-making process."

Publication: Tetsuro Maeda, MD, a Pulmonary fellow, Sandhya Khurana, MD, and Michael Nead, MD, PhD, from Pulmonary & Critical Care Medicine, are co-authors of "Pulmonary Embolism Diagnosed During Endobronchial Ultrasound in a Patient With Major Trauma," published in Cureus.

Publication: William Archibald, MD, a Hematology/Oncology fellow, and Clive Zent, MD, from Hematology/Oncology, are authors of "The role of splenectomy in management of splenic B-cell lymphomas," published in Leukemia Research.

Youngrin Kim, MD, from Highland Hospital, earned an RBJ Health Care Hero Award. Highland shared a great tweet to celebrate their winners! (Full magazine: Kim's profile on page 27.)

Daniel Mendelson, MS, MD, from Geriatrics & Aging, was honored with the Carter Catlett Williams Award for Excellence in Aging or Long-term Care Services. One highlight of Lifespan's annual Celebration of Aging event was meeting famed footballer Jim Kelly.

On May 17, SMD Dean Mark Taubman will host an event that honors named professorships and celebrates mentorship awards. Thomas Caprio, MD, from Geriatrics & Aging, earned the Faculty Academic Mentoring Award, and Carla Casulo, MD, from Hematology/Oncology, earned the Trainee Academic Mentoring Award in Clinical Programs.
