AAMC Learner Summer - June 16-18 | Washington, DC
We are accepting applications from medical students, residents, fellows, PhD, MD-PhD, and postdoctoral program students interested in professional and leadership development.
This three-day event will unite learners to explore critical issues impacting academic medicine and research, discuss career pathways and planning, and build professional and leadership skills. The agenda will have a mix of keynote sessions and presentations focusing on mentorship, financial wellness, health advocacy and policy, work-life balance, developing and polishing a professional brand, and transitions to residency, practice, and research faculty.
The AAMC will cover registration, and lodging. Attendees are responsible for all other costs (i.e., securing travel, transportation, meals, etc.).

UCLA Bio-Launch: Inaugural Postdoc Recruitment Event
UCLA's Bioscience Postdoc Affairs are hosting UCLA Bio-Launch, a virtual postdoctoral recruitment initiative. Selected candidates will be invited to participate in a 2-day virtual information and professional development event (May 3-4, 2023). Included in Bio-Launch, are two professional development workshops to help early-stage researchers find a good mentor and prepare for informational interviews. As part of the virtual event, you will also have the opportunity to talk to current UCLA postdocs about their experiences and network with UCLA faculty. UCLA Bio-Launch also includes a matching service with Bio-Launch Mentors (faculty/PIs from the Division of Life Sciences and David Geffen School of Medicine) that have committed to meeting for informational interviews with participants. Virtual informational interviews are expected to occur during the post-event recruitment period (May 5-26). Prospective postdoc participants will be responsible for scheduling virtual informational interviews with their faculty partners once they receive their match information.
How It Works:
- You submit an application by March 24.
- In your application, you will identify 3 potential faculty members you're interested in working with from our list of Bio-Launch Mentors.
- If you are accepted into the program, you will be invited to attend our virtual events and we will match you with 1-3 mentors. You will be given their profiles and contact information to reach out and schedule an informational interview during the recruitment period.

Three Minute Thesis (3MT)
Can you describe your thesis to a stranger in three minutes?
Perfect your pitch and can explain the value of their work to fellow researchers as well as to the public, policymakers and funding agencies during the Three Minute Thesis (3MT®). The 3MTcompetition represents an invaluable opportunity for students to sharpen their research focus, improve their presentation skills, while conveying the potential and impact of their work with a perfect pitch in just three minutes.
Competition finalists will present on April 4, 2023, from 3:45–6 p.m.

URMC FiLMS Microbiome Symposium
URMC will be hosting the inaugural URMC FiLMS Microbiome Symposium on April 21st, 2023. If you are conducting any research related to the microbiome, please consider presenting -- abstracts are due Feb. 21st!!
Even if you do not have work to present, you can still attend! There is an excellent line up of speakers, and you'll get a chance to hear about microbiome-related work going on around campus from trainee presenters. The deadline for registration is March 21st.

Postdoctoral Research Training and Career Progression within the Biomedical Research Enterprise
NIH announced a Request for Information (RFI) inviting the research community to give input on the state of postdoctoral research training and career progression infrastructure in biomedical science developed by a working group of the NIH Advisory Committee to the Director. The RFI is open through April 14, 2023.
I want to make you aware that NIH is also hosting a series of listening sessions to hear from the community about their experiences with and perspectives on current infrastructure and share input on potential promising solutions to the fundamental challenges faced by the postdoctoral trainee community. Listening sessions will take place throughout March 2023, and each session will focus on a specific theme:
- Wednesday, March 8, 12:30 – 1:30 p.m. ET: Role, duration, structure, and value of the academic postdoc, including the effects on underrepresented populations.
- Friday, March 10, 1:30 – 2:30 p.m. ET: International trainee concerns.
- Friday, March 17, 12:30 – 1:30 p.m. ET: Compensation and benefits, including childcare and dependent care.
- Monday, March 20, 1:30 – 2:30 p.m. ET: Job security, career prospects, and quality of life.
The insights from the listening sessions and RFI will assist NIH in hearing the voices of postdoctoral trainees along with others impacted by this unique and skilled training position, and in exploring ways to address some of the fundamental challenges faced by the postdoctoral trainee community.

To be considered for a talk, submit your registration by 5:00 pm on Monday, April 3rd, 2023 and indicate on the registration that you would like to be considered for the short talk competition. Registrants not selected for a talk are expected to present a poster. To present a poster and be eligible for a poster prize, submit your registration by 5:00 pm on Monday, April 10th, 2023
Poster awards will be given to graduate students, postdocs, undergraduates, staff, and faculty. Trainees selected for and presenting short talks will receive a special prize. Cash prizes available

UR CTSI Digital Health Seedling Award Program: Request for Applications
The UR CTSI’s Digital Health Seedling Award provides up to $25,000 to support research that advances the development, approval, adoption and use of innovative digital health tools, methods and approaches. The one-year award is available to full-time faculty at the University of Rochester who are studying digital health approaches, tools and data including utilizing sensors and mobile technologies, electronic medical records, data from registries and other real world data and approaches to advance clinical research and address regulatory science needs. To Thrive or Not to Thrive: Work/Academic Stress and Resiliency Workshop
Want to learn coping strategies to be more resilient while trying to balance school and work? The necessity of working while in school is a reality for most undergraduate and graduate students. A majority of working college students log 15 to 35 hours per week, according to the Georgetown University Center on Education and the Workforce. These same workers may endure high levels of work-related and academic stress simultaneously. These strains are associated with negative health consequences, short and long-term. The Health Promotion Office is hosting a Work/Academic Stress and Resiliency Workshop on March 17th from 12-1:15 PM via Zoom to help equip you with the ability to seek solutions that mitigate stress and maximize skills leading to resiliency. Open to undergraduate and graduate students. Registration is required.
Graduate Student Budgeting Workshop
Are you a graduate student and you're not sure how to better manage your money? Need to develop a spending plan? Want to start saving in case of life happens? Budgeting can be stressful while in graduate school. The Financial Aid Office & the UHS Health Promotion Office will be holding a workshop for graduate students seeking knowledge and tools to put healthy financial skills into practice on March 16th from 12-12:50 PM via Zoom. Join us virtually to develop a spending plan and consider how income and savings can dictate your expenses. Learn how to evaluate and modify your plan as life happens. The session will be led by a financial aid counselor from the Financial Aid Office who will coach you on how to begin to manage your money. This workshop does not take the place of professional financial advisement and will not make any specific investment recommendations. Open to enrolled graduate students. Registration is required.
The Body Project
There is an exciting upcoming opportunity to take part in a 4-week evidence-based program called The Body Project! It will take place on March 14th for four weeks from 4-5 PM in the UHS 4th floor RAM Room. The Body Project is an evidenced-based body acceptance program offered in a group setting that provides a safe space for all women to confront and challenge unrealistic appearance ideals through group discussion and interactive activities. The program seeks to give participants knowledge in developing a healthier body image and self-esteem. In numerous research studies, it has repeatedly been shown to effectively reduce body dissatisfaction and internalization of the appearance ideal. Open to all women who are undergraduate and graduate students. Non-binary students are welcome, but should know that this course is designed for participants for whom being a woman is a part of their lived experience. Registration is required.
