AAPI Faculty Panel Discussion with Indian Professors

The AAPI Trainee Support Committee will host the AAPI faculty panel discussion with Indian professors from Noon to 1 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 28th via Zoom. Three AAPI professors with Indian heritages will discuss their experiences in academia (e.g., implicit bias, micro-aggression, and unequal treatment), what they recommend for AAPI trainees, what non-AAPI mentors/persons can do to support AAPI trainees, and Indian specific matters/details that affect training. We hope it will help many trainees navigate systemic racism in academia and training and also receive support. Any member at U of R who is interested in this topic are welcome to join. Our guest speaker, Kirk J. Macolini, President, Principal Consultant & Founder of Intelispark, has over 15 years of experience with the SBIR and STTR programs and supporting the development of successful proposals. The workshop will provide 1) Overview of Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) programs, trends and funding opportunities, 2) Strategies for developing successful SBIR/STTR proposals, and 3) Open Q&A session.

Please join the Rochester Indian Association for an evening of dance, music and theater as they celebrate URJA'22, the flagship event of Rochester Indian Association. URJA (meaning "energy") celebrates Diwali, the festival of lights. Across India, there are different myths that surround this festival, but the underlying theme of all stories is the triumph of good over evil - within us and around us. We celebrate this victory with friends and family, with music and dance and good food!

GSS Secretary Position Opening
The Graduate Student Society is currently seeking nominations in the executive board for Secretary. The Secretary vote will occur at our November meeting, Thursday, November 10th. The transition period will occur with the current secretary the month of November. The Secretary role entails running the GSSBoard email account, attending the monthly GSS meetings, helping to plan three events per year, and attending monthly myHub and GSS Leaders meetings.

If you would like to nominate yourself or someone else, please email the GSS Board account. Nominations will be discussed further at our next meeting (Thursday, November 10th). If you would like more information about the position please feel free to reach out to the GSS Board account with any questions.

In the case that someone runs unattested, we will hold a vote of confidence at the meeting.

Yale School of Medicine Science Fellows Program
Yale seeks outstanding recent PhD graduates who — through their research, outreach, mentoring, teaching, and leadership have a record of excellence in their field and have shown great potential for creativity and productivity.

Cancer Epigenetics Training Program (funded by a National Cancer Institute T32 award)

  • Offers cutting-edge, interdisciplinary research training in structural and functional aspects of epigenetics, complemented by state-of-the-art Core Technologies and Services, unique professional development activities, and integration with established translational research programs and partnerships led by VAI investigators.
  • Eligibility: Applicants must be near completion of a Ph.D., M.D. or other appropriate terminal degree Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents. Individuals who identify as members of underrepresented racial and ethnic groups are strongly encouraged to apply.

Inspire Fellowship

  • Supports postdocs who identify as members of underrepresented racial or ethnic groups as they finish preparing to be independent research leaders in academia or industry.
  • Provides $50,000 per year toward the Inspire Fellow’s salary, which starts at $57,200. Support is renewable for up to two additional years (so three years total).
  • Eligibility: Applicants must be within 12 months of completing a Ph.D., M.D. or other appropriate terminal degree. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents who identify as members of an underrepresented racial or ethnic group as defined by NIH.

Funding, Grant and Travel Award Opportunities

GWIS Fall Travel Award 2022
The deadline for the Travel Award application is TUESDAY, November 15th at noon. You must be a graduate student in years 1 through 5 and an active participant in GWIS. Travel will be sponsored on the basis of scientific merit (thus it is key that you describe your past and ongoing research), need (explain why the requested travel is important for your scientific growth), and regular participation at GWIS meetings as evidenced from the meeting registrations and sign-in sheets. To date, 66 GWIS members have received Travel Awards. There are two steps for completing an application:

Step 1. Submit a completed Application Form along with a copy of your C.V. and copies of your peer-reviewed publications to stephanie_scoville@urmc.rochester.edu by noon on November 15.

Step 2. Request that your Ph.D. mentor and one of your Ph.D. advisory committee members each forward a letter of reference to stephanie_scoville@urmc.rochester.edu by noon on November 15.

Rising Black Scientists Award Applications Open
Cell Signaling Technology and the Elsevier Foundation are seeking Black aspiring graduate student and postdoctoral scholar scientists or active researchers at American institutions within the United States to apply for the Rising Black Scientists Award to provide funds to support professional development. Winners will receive $10,000 award, $500 in travel funds, and complementary registration for an Elsevier conference of their choice that occurs within 2 years of the award announcement. Graduate students and postdoctoral scholars are eligible to apply. Full details here.

Relax & Renew Silent Meditation Retreat
Join us in noble silence for our Relax and Renew silent meditation retreat for all staff, faculty and students. This immersive meditation experience will bring you into various contemplative practices including breath awareness meditation, gentle yoga, mindful walking, and lessons about the practice of mindfulness in everyday life. This experience will take place on Saturday, November 5 from 8:30am-12:30 pm in Spurrier Dance Studio. Register here.

The International Student and Scholar Advisory Board is looking for leaders to:
 
Provide feedback to ISO on policies and practices.

  • Facilitate communication between ISO and the University’s international community.
  • Identify issues across the University that impact the international population.
  • Develop programs that create opportunities for networking and engagement.  

Interested students should be:

  • Currently registered University of Rochester students for 2022-2023 academic year
  • Available in Rochester for in-person meetings and events as needed
  • Able to commit to 1-5 hours of involvement per month from September
