Welcoming Two New Vice-Chairs
 
Congratulations to Stephen Hammes, M.D., Ph.D. and Daniel Mulkerin, M.D. who have been appointed to leadership roles in the DOM. Hammes will add executive vice-chair to his existing titles, and Mulkerin, who recently joined URMC, will take on the role of vice-chair for Regional Operations in addition to his role at Wilmot.

New Book from Tim Quill Explores End-of-Life Options
 
Internationally renowned palliative care expert Tim Quill, M.D. has released a new book exploring the lesser-known practice of voluntarily stopping eating and drinking. Division chief Robert Horowitz, M.D., contributed to several chapters as well.
 
 
 
Wilmot Leaders Share Success at GeriOnc Conference
 
Researchers from the Wilmot Cancer Institute presented at the International Society of Geriatric Oncology (SIOG) in November. "All of our presenters are being mentored by Wilmot senior faculty and we are proud of how effective our program has become."

Awards: The Palliative Care division has earned Joint Commission re-certification for the fifth time. The division is applauded for clinical care delivery and continuous quality improvement initiatives.

Publications: David Bushinsky, M.D. has discovered a link between kidney disease and bone loss. His research was published in the American Journal of Physiology. "Understanding the mechanisms by which acidosis causes a loss of bone calcium may lead to new approaches to improve bone quality and reduce fractures."

New Role: Allen Anandarajah, M.B.B.S. has been named associate chair for Wellness of the DOM in addition to his faculty and clinical roles. He will work closely with leadership to promote resilience and wellness across all of our missions.

Event: The inaugural Dean's Lectureship Series is at 4 pm on Monday, Dec. 6 in the Class of '62 Auditorium and via zoom. Vera Gorbunova, Ph.D., the Doris Johns Cherry Professor of Biology and Medicine and a member of the University of Rochester Aging Institute will give the inaugural lecture: "Mechanisms of Longevity: Lessons from Long-Lived Mammals." Emily Weis, M.D., M.S. has been riding since she was five years old. She rode all through graduate school, medical school, and her residency/fellowship. Today, she and her husband Justin Weis, M.D. own a 40-acre farm and equestrian center, Daymark Farm, in Geneseo. Their ten-year-old son has two ponies, and Weis has 3 horses of her own.
